The storyline has two main characters: The new RZR and Sonoran landscapes. Our main goal was let them meet each other, and then make life off road. This project is a mini series, three videos to see our RZR in different locations and how every situation gets exciting.

Getting in Context.

Polaris is a wide-world known brand of off-road cars, so they need the best off-road video producers for the new RZR model advertisements, that’s where DVL Film House gets on board on the project. Advertising agency “Tandem” (from Monterrey, NL.) invited us to collaborate with them. Our experience in off-road films (The Bajaboot Project, Sonora Rally, etc.), professionalism, high standards and the Sonoran landscape, made us the perfect match for this project. Our excitement aroused when we heard the ad was airing on the 2021 Super Bowl Sunday broadcasted by TV Azteca . Every ad’s dream.

PREPRODUCTION

Hiding and revealing the locations was a very special thing about these videos, it had to take us surprisely, because of this, the production design department was very important, they had the hard task of adequate outdoors locations to film sets.

We need to communicate the surprise factor in every piece. The art, camera, lights, performance and even the weather they had to be perfectly well execute.

– Director Alex Mendivil

The Black Magic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, A.K.A. Pocket 6K as a first camera was the right choice, the large format gave us flexibility in the post production process. Also, the portability of this camera made the filming less complicated.

The scene block was so simple, functional. We used a dana dolly and tripod for story and dialogues shots, and then, we used a DJI Phantom Pro 4 , for action and aerial shots.

We choose San Nicolas, Rancho El Tahuari and El Cañon de Nacapule as our main locations. These places are very unique because of their landscapes and weather. We had the task of finding the right spot, and then, built the film sets…  we made it successfully.

PRODUCTION DESIGN- TAKING A LIVING ROOM TO THE SONORAN DUNES

A cold and neutral color palette is proposed, based on the brand’s product line, for the first part of the spots. We will express the contrast of the boring, comfortable and ordinary world. The deco of the Set 1 – Living Room, is based on a typical everyday life – mexican living room.

GOT YOU! It's NOT Actually a Real Plane...

A The plane set-up was a little trickier, with the help of an architect, we build and transpored a very delicate structure and completed the look with vintage setas from a 70’s plane from Parque La Ruina.

Meticulous organization and logistic were key in order to transport and assemble the sets as expected and most importantly, on time.
